This course will primarily explore the Fourth Foundation of Mindfulness, but the first two sessions will review the first three Foundations of Mindfulness. The course is appropriate for both those who have attended the previous offerings of this course and those who have not previously attended.

The Satipatthana Sutta is one of the foundational discourses that informs the practice of Buddhist meditation, particularly in the Theravada Buddhist tradition. The Four Foundations of Mindfulness refer to four aspects accessible in our everyday experience. The Buddha taught that insight into these four aspects of experience were particularly potent means of inclining the mind toward awakening. The main resource book for the class will be Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Awakening by Joseph Goldstein.

Mindfulness by Joseph Goldstein is one of the most clear and cogent resources for studying the Satipatthana Sutta, its relevance to insight meditation, and how practice of insight meditation moves us in the direction of cessation of suffering.

In order to deepen your practice through this course there will be reading assignments and practice exercises. Each class will include sitting meditation with instructions on one aspect of mindfulness and insight meditation practice, group discussion of the practice exercises and the readings, and a Dharma talk on the assigned reading. Registration is required, and participants will be asked to commit to attending classes as regularly as possible.
